Just now, I signed up for a twitter account.

I have no idea how to make it work, but soon enough I will. You can sign up and follow me at http://www.twitter.com/realityunwound.

The push to sign up came after reading at Hotair.com about what’s happening to the Conservative infrastructure. Basically… it’s happening! Good stuff is going down and the groundwork is being laid as we speak.

Which has really helped me focus my passion. I’m not the kind of guy who can be motivated to do something just because. I’ve gotta feel it. The clarity has come in the past weeks. I love the idea that a grassroots movement can change the world.

I believed it when I followed Phish around the country. I loved the concept of being a part of something that most people would consider “underground.” I celebrated millennium at a concert with a hundred thousand people who were equally stoked about being a part of the “underground” movement.

Even now as a pastor, my passion is community. I believe that the synergy created when groups of people get together and focus on making a difference in a situation, or on addressing a problem, amazing things happen. I’ve seen small groups of people make significant impacts in the world around them, simply because they cared enough to engage in the process. So I’m challenged to do the same.

So get involved. Have a conversation. Ask a hard question of someone who believes differently than you do. Listen well, and when you’ve heard and understood, smile, and share what you know. If it’s not about politics, let it be about faith. If it’s not about politics or faith, let it be about education, or human rights, or the cost of living. Spend time nurturing that Thing that riles your soul. Bill Hybels calls it Holy Discontent. Find it, celebrate it, nurture it, just don’t let it die.

Now, what’s your Holy Discontent? What is it that keeps you up at night?

Mine: the disengaged life.

Holy Discontent. Hmmmm… There isn’t much holy about a lot of the discontent I see in this world. Seems anything but holy. When we’re forunate to have a twinge of HD, then we’re on to something special: change. You asked what keeps one up at night? How fitting for me to try and answer that – me, one wbo doesn’t sleep much these days. With a good idea that you might be prompting a discussion on something far more deeper than I could ever tap into – I’ll share what riles me – WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT.

1. Social Networks – Stephanie is now typing nonsense. Stephanie wishes she could sleep.
2. People that make themselves and everyone around them crazy at Christmas time, spend like crazy, create drama, fret over past holiday misgivings, count gifts, buy because someone bought them something, decorate like crazy, and complain while doing so.
3. Cashiers who open up a new register, and announce to the person who just walked up to a line 10 deep that they will take the next customer – and the person actually gets taken next!!
4. Online dating services. A great way to hook yourself up on a blind date, and an even better means to meet serial daters within a pool of just-made-for-you matches. If you are such a great guy who makes friends easily, then why are you on the internet trying to score women?
5. Contented people. Who gives them the right to be content with thier home, job, wife, kids … loving life just the way it is? We’re living in America for crying out loud. These folks make the rest of us look bad. They probably watch NASCAR and do homework with thier kids.

It’s late. My truth is that discontent seeps in when I’m not following God. When i’m following God – I’m happy to hear that someone is now baking cookies, prompted to reach out to the one in the uncalled for holiday frenzy, patient with the cashier – forgiving of the ignorant (sorry God – I’m trying) customer, wishing a connection for the lonely dater, and counting my blessings to know a contented soul who makes time for thier kids. Holy Discontent is the Spirit’s gift of unease in an uneasy world, and the discernment to make a fruitful change.

Stephanie – the best thinking comes in the wee hours. You’re simply making yourself available for those thoughts. I hate the 10th person in line is the first to the new register phenomenon. Join twitter and look me up. Twitter.com/realityunwound. I’ll tweet you there!
