Harry Reid (D-Nevada) is the Senate Majority leader, which means that he’s the ranking senator on the hill. He is the leader of the august body of men and women chosen to lead and govern this great nation. He is Nevada’s chosen man to represent them in the government “of the people, by the people, for the people.” Unfortunately, Reid thinks the people stink,
At the opening of the Congressional Visitors Center, Reid has this to say in the D.C. Examiner,
“My staff tells me not to say this, but I’m going to say it anyway,” said Reid in his remarks. “In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol. It may be descriptive but it’s true.”
Real nice Senator. Whith a great opportunity to herald the wonder of American Democracy, to celebrate the hundreds of years of history that have shaped this greatest nation in the history of the world, all this out of touch super-liberal can come up with is that at least now he won’t have to smell the tourists anymore.
So, since this is an action based, forward looking blog, my challenge to you all is to let Senator Reid know how distasteful you think his comments were. You can send Senator Reid an e-mail from this site. Here’s what I wrote:
Dear Senator Reid,
Thank you for your continued service to our country. I can’t imagine the pressure you must feel, with the weight of this enormous responsibility on your shoulders. The call to govern well is a weighty one, and I pray you will have the grace and wisdom to discharge your duty.
I wanted to covey my displeasure at reading in the D.C. Examiner of your remarks about “not having to “literally smell the tourists” during the summer months any more. Come on Senator. At the opening of such a significant thing as the Congressional Visitors Center, the very best thing you could come up with was that you won’t have to smell the people?
As a Senator you have a significant responsibility. As the Majority leader, your responsibilities are not only to the people of Nevada, but to the people of America. Your comments are out of line and distateful at the best. I hope you will consider issuing an apology to the people you represent.
Thank you again for being open to the people you represent. My prayers for your wise governance continue.
Grace & Peace,
Jason Powers
Now, what will happen because of my e-mail? First, I will recieve a form letter, indicating that the message was received. Beyond that, probably not much. So, why should you write your senator?
- You have a right and a responsibility to participate in government. It’s part of being an American. This isn’t a major policy issue, but it’s an opportunity for you to be heard.
- It’s important to exercise the muscles that control our participation in government. You’d be surprised, when you discover how easy it is to share your thoughts, how you might find yourself going back for weightier matters.
- Our Government leaders are elected to represent you. If they don’t, let them know.
So consider writing Senator Reid. If not him, then write your Senator or congressman and let them know what you feel about a topic that you care about. Each e-mail is read, and I promise that they are cataloged. They do understand that they are elected by you. You can influence the course of American History. Get involved in what’s going on.
Why does, or doesn’t the idea of writing your congressional leaders appeal to you?
